Smart Sewer Technology photosBeginning in 2010, KC Water’s Smart Sewer program was originally called the “Overflow Control Program,” which describes the primary purpose: to reduce sewer overflows when we have wet weather, like rain or significant snow melting. It was renamed the KC Smart Sewer program in 2017 to reflect the City’s use of innovative methods and technologies that power the program.

The Smart Sewer program fulfills our commitment and obligation to protect the health of Kansas Citians and our natural environment as defined in the federal Consent Decree. The Consent Decree incorporates the major elements of the 2009 Overflow Control Plan, which was developed for the Kansas City community incorporating input from a publicly formed Wet Weather Committee panel.

  • Repair when we can. Replace where we must. Build new only when necessary.
  • Use innovative practices.
  • Use technology to work efficiently and safely.
  • Integrate green infrastructure to provide multiple community benefits.
