KC Water is working to design and construct important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood. This project will include the rehabilitation of sewer mains, service lateral connections, and manholes in your area to like-new conditions. When complete, the project will improve the capacity of the wastewater collection system and reduce the volume of sewer overflows into local waterways and the potential for basement backups.

You might also hear about KC Water’s Keep Out the Rain program that is actively working in this project area. The voluntary, limited-time program helps residents find and fix prohibited sewer connections at no cost to the property owner. See if your property is eligible.

  • Temporary sewer service disruptions

Who’s doing the work?

KC Water will be assisted by its program manager, Burns & McDonnell, and its design professional, George Butler Associates (GBA). The selected contractor is Havens Construction Company, Inc.

What’s the “Consent Decree”?

In 2010, the City of Kansas City, Missouri entered into a federal Consent Decree with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the volume of overflows from the City’s sewer system. KC Water’s Smart Sewer program is a 30-year effort to address this challenge. The Birmingham/Shoal Creek Area 2 Inflow & Infiltration Reduction Project is one of more than 100 projects being implemented by the Smart Sewer program and is required by the Consent Decree to be completed by December 2029.
