This project is currently in design. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2024.

KC Water is working to design and construct important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood. This project will involve installing a new relief sewer that will run parallel to Ward Parkway. When complete, the project will improve the capacity of the wastewater collection system and reduce the volume of sewer overflows into local creeks, streams, and rivers.

What are the project boundaries?

  • North: 89th Street
  • South: Bannister Road
  • East: Oak Street
  • West: State Line Road

What’s being done?

The project includes installing approximately 5,100 linear feet of relief sewer ranging from 10-36 inches in diameter. This pipe will replace the existing combined sewer and increase flow to the wastewater treatment plant, reducing the volume of combined sewer overflows into Dykes Branch Creek and the Blue River.

What’s the timeline?

Design is anticipated to be completed in June 2024, with construction scheduled to begin in October 2024.

What can you expect?

We appreciate your support and patience as we work to complete this important community project. Customers will be notified in advance of pending disruptions, which may include:

  • Large equipment creating noise and dusty conditions
  • Temporary traffic disruptions along Ward Parkway
  • Temporary sewer service disruptions
  • Select tree clearing only where necessary with installation of trees during planting season after construction
  • Temporary sidewalk disruptions along Ward Parkway

Who’s doing the work?

KC Water will be assisted by its program manager, Burns & McDonnell, and its design professional, Lamp Rynearson. The construction contractor has not yet been determined and will be selected through the City’s open bid process.

What’s the contract amount?

The total budget for this project is currently $14,640,000.

Why is this work being done?

In 2010, the City of Kansas City, Missouri entered into a federal Consent Decree with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the volume of overflows from the City’s sewer system. KC Water’s Smart Sewer program is a 30-year effort to address this challenge. The Dykes Branch Interceptor Relief Sewer Project is one of more than 100 projects being implemented by the Smart Sewer program, and is required by the Consent Decree to be completed by December 31, 2025.
