KC Water is working to design and construct important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood. This project will include the rehabilitation of sewer mains, service lateral connections, and manholes in your area to like-new conditions. When complete, the project will improve the capacity of the wastewater collection system and reduce the volume of sewer overflows into local waterways and the potential for basement backups.

What’s being done?
The construction portion of this project includes rehabilitation and/or replacement of approximately:
- 29,000 linear feet of sewer main
- 370 manholes
What’s the timeline?
Construction began in June 2024 and is expected to be completed by July 2025.
What can you expect?
We appreciate your support and patience as we work to complete this important community project. Customers will be notified in advance of pending activity, which may include:
- Large equipment creating noise and dusty conditions
- Temporary street and lane closures
- Temporary sewer service disruptions
Who’s doing the work?
KC Water will be assisted by its program manager, Burns & McDonnell, and its design professional, George Butler Associates. The construction contractor will be selected through the City’s open bid process.
What’s the contract amount?
The contract for the design portion of this project is approximately $589,000.
What’s the “Consent Decree”?
In 2010, the City of Kansas City, Missouri entered into a federal Consent Decree with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the volume of overflows from the City’s sewer system. KC Water’s Smart Sewer program is a 30-year effort to address this challenge. The Northern Basins Area 1 Inflow & Infiltration Reduction Project is one of more than 100 projects being implemented by the Smart Sewer program and is required by the Consent Decree to be completed by December 2027.
