KC Water is working to construct important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood to improve flow to the Blue River Interceptor Sewer. When complete, the project will improve the capacity of system and reduce the volume of sewer overflows from Outfall 055 into the Blue River.

What’s being done?
Construction of this project will include installing new sanitary and combined sewers to reduce the volume of combined sewer overflows at Outfall 055 into the Blue River.
What is an outfall?
Outfalls are located where sewer contents exit the system and enter the environment. Kansas City manages and maintains more than 80 combined sewer outfalls.
What’s the timeline?
Construction is expected to begin in February 2024 and completed in August 2024.
What can you expect?
We appreciate your support and patience as we work to complete this important community project. Customers will be notified in advance of pending disruptions, which may include:
- Large equipment creating noise and dusty conditions
- Temporary lane closures
Who’s doing the work?
KC Water will be assisted by its program manager, Burns & McDonnell; its design professional, Dubois Consultants; and its construction contractor, Infrastructure Solutions.
What’s the contract amount?
The total contract amount for design and construction of this project is approximately $1,475,000.
What’s the “Consent Decree”?
In 2010, the City of Kansas City, Missouri entered into a federal Consent Decree with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the volume of overflows from the City’s sewer system. KC Water’s Smart Sewer program is a 30-year effort to address this challenge. The Dry Weather Sewer Line: Outfall 055 Project is one of more than 100 projects being implemented by the Smart Sewer program as required by the Consent Decree to be completed by December 2024.
